For most of my life I had this running commentary in my head that sounded like, “I’m not good at this so I’m not going to like this. I’ll just sit on the sidelines.” Which, truthfully, kept me “safe” but wasn’t a lot of fun to be around. What was also happening subconsciously was “I’m not pretty enough for that attention. I’m not funny or loud enough to make up for the fact that I suck at this. I am not smart enough to do that”
Years later I realized that what kept me from trying new things or having fun was a lack of belief in myself. You might believe you’re failing, but what if you’re actually just sabotaging your own success? Here’s one really easy way to know if you’re doing it and how to fix it…
What if instead, you looked at your internal dialogue as practicing for the life you want to be living?
We all know that to get good at any skill takes practice. Even the professionals spend countless hours on their craft.
So by saying things like “I don’t have time, I don’t have the energy, that’s just not in the cards for me, I don’t think I’d be good at that, I’m just not the person that gets successful at that kind of thing, I’m not pretty or funny enough for that,” etc, you’re just practicing for the life that you’ve lived up to this point. And if you’re not happy with where you are, you’re practicing living the life you actually don’t like living.
Because the choices you’ve made up to here are based on what you believe to be true about yourself.
But if we can switch our inner dialogue to BELIEF that we CAN, or at least try and give it our best shot consistently over a period of time, we are practicing for the life we actually want to be living! Tracking with me still?
Majority of the time, you are the thing standing in your own way. You quit before you even start because you’ve practiced believing you can’t so much.
You want to start having more patience for your kids? Switch from “I’m going to lose it!” to “I can have patience because she’s just learning.”
“Nobody would even care to hear what I have to say” to “My story and perspective is useful to help somebody.”
Shift “I have zero motivation to work on my project today” to “I’ll work on my project for 5 minutes even if that’s all I can do today”
Start practicing for the life you actually want to be living and watch it all change in front of your own eyes! It’s not magic, but it kind of feels like it when things start happening for you.
